    Wife Found My Stash

Mine got peek a little while ago. Same religious outburst. Same reciprocal merchandise.

    End of Bowl Procedure

Yep, I only remove the stem when I start sensing sourness. When this happens, I do a deep clean of the stem and bowl with pipe cleaners soaked in Everclear. After the initial soaking I'll scrub with the pipe cleaners dry until the stop picking up color. After every smoke I run dry cleaners...

    More Pipes or More Tobaccos??

Definitely tobacco. My wife thinks I'm crazy for buying crumbly leaves in fancy tin cans, but I see the writing on the wall. Prices will never be cheaper and availability will likely only go down.

    Storing Tobacco In The Car

I only smoke codger blends (Carter Hall, Prince Albert, etc.) in the car. I use an old Peterson calfskin puch with a rubber liner. They seem to have enough humectant to keep fresh all week.

Tobacco Only Burning Down in the Center, Not Around!

I'll second the "venturi" method: Tamp, light, then hold you tamper just above the center of the ash as you draw. Promotes combustion 'round the edge. This only works if you haven't burnt the center down too far.

Do You Really Like to Smoke a Pipe With Filter

I notice no difference in flavor between the two. All my cobs are all filtered and I prefer them for lunting and in the car. I'll get about three bowls out a filter before I change it. My REAL preference are my Kirstens. Low moisture, cool smoke, and easy to clean.

I Need Some Advice With Tasting The Tobacco

+1 for the breathe method. Took me all of two years to start really getting real flavor. This made the difference for me.

    Kids Are Soft These Days

I remember folks saying things like that about me 40 years ago. I grew out of it.

How Many Bowls a Day Do You Smoke?

3-4 a day. Usually 2 in the car and 1-2 in the evening on the porch during the summer. I can sit by the fireplace in the winter and smoke all I want.

    Beginner

I too had a hard time when first switching to a pipe full time. My cigarette and cigars days worked against me. 30-year habits are hard to break and I'm still looking for that perfect smoke. :) Some things that helped me: Smoke slowly, with small sips. No, slower than that. Dry your tobacco...

    Zippo Pipe Lighter

Love my petrol Zippos. As stated above, all you have to do is let it burn for a second or two before touching the tobacco. I find that keeping it well above the top of the bowl, I can draw enough heat to get the job done without drawing fumes. Just never let the flame actually touch the leaf. I...

    Confirmation Bias?

I recently tried pipesmagazine.com and came away pleasantly surprised. The tin note was of woodsy, fresh-cut grass with a hay component. I would say the campfire overtones were a bit offputting if they weren't counterbalanced by the dark fruit and leather. Al in all, a must-try.

Have all of you (or almost all) started on cheap aros?

But, to answer your question, about a year of solid daily smoking.

Have all of you (or almost all) started on cheap aros?

I am only now starting to discern the different flavors to a satisfactory extent. I started noticing them gradually. I would have the occasional bowl that tasted great the whole way through, others that started fine then petered out, and others that were just terrible from start to finish. The...
