    Tastes like burned leaves

alexashe, give this a try: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXZYxWwReOc Also, I do something that a member here told me is called "the French method", which is to intentionally smell the smoke after I exhale it from my mouth. In short, tobacco tastes like burnt leaves because that is what it is...

A Note to All Corn Cob Pipe Lovers

And here's a different perspective. It's one that I follow. Works well for me. Something about cake buildup creeps me out. I clean my cobs after every use. And the first pipe cleaner though always has a dab of alcohol on it. Just be sure and let them dry out for a full day.

    Lane 1-Q

If you like 1-Q then I also recommend trying RLP-6. I like it better than 1-Q. I am an aromatic fan myself and like most Lane products. Their Missouri Meerschaum branded Great Dane is my favorite.

    Breaking in a Pipe

I recently tried out a brand new Dr Grabow pipe. It had a factory coating. It was HORRIBLE. It had a sour bitter chemical taste. I took sandpaper to it and sanded it to bare wood. Now it's fine. Why on earth do they coat it with that nasty stuff? It's going to turn new smokers off entirely. (I...

The Emperor's New Clothes, Musings of a New Pipe Smoker

But cigarette smokers are inhaling. When inhaling, it's almost impossible NOT to get smoke to your olfactory nerves. Thus, full bodied "taste". Presumably, most pipe smokers are not inhaling. The smoke is getting to the tongue but not necessarily the olfactory. Thus little to no taste. (An onion...

The Emperor's New Clothes, Musings of a New Pipe Smoker

Definitely. I've jarred everything in small Ball canning jars for just that reason. Since I am really liking pipes and pipe tobaccos, I've decided to catalog my beginner's advice so that I can share it with any friends and family that express interest. Yes. I have wondered about that, if I...

Help Wanted: I Need Pipe and Tobacco Suggestions..

Also, since you said you like Captain Black, you should take advantage of this: https://www.pipesandcigars.com/cb5 If you use that exact URL, the Captain Black 5 flavor sampler is only $5 with free shipping. That's $1 per pouch. I believe the deal is good until 4/15/2019. My favorite of those 5...

Help Wanted: I Need Pipe and Tobacco Suggestions..

I'm a new pipe smoker myself. Since you said you favor the aromatic tobaccos, my current favorite aromatic is Missouri Meerscham Great Dane. I definitely recommend it. If you want to try a VaPer, the one I hear recommended a lot, and that I have tried, is Orlik Golden Sliced. Very mellow...

    Bit Style

Thanks! Upon further investigation it appears that the holes are intentionally drilled offset, and there is about a half inch distance between them so it doesn't effect the smoke passing through. So with one, I can do like you say, and rotate the pipe cleaner 180 degrees and get it to go into...

Any Recommendation for a Decent Lighter Under $60?

I recently picked up one of these. It's 25 bucks. Pros: It's heavy (I like that). You don't have to hold anything for it to stay lit. (Close it to turn it off.) The angle of the flame is parallel to the bowl when you hold it naturally (not directed down - good IMO). Cons: I seem to have to fill...

    Lazy saturday afternoon.

Very busy Saturday for me, but that's all over, and I'm about to enjoy a bowl of MM Great Dane in a MM Country Gentleman, paired with some Jim Beam Apple Whiskey. Yum!

Hey new to the forums. I have a couple questions

I'll take a stab at this one. I'm a newbie, so I could be totally wrong, but from my experience, VaPers (Virginia/Perique blends) seem to be the closest to cigars. To my palette they are anyway. Not the same, but similar.

Does Zippo screw up the flavor?

A newb here, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I find that I have to hold a soft flame butane lighter over the tobacco much longer than a pipe Zippo. I have to swirl it around a few times to get a good light (the butane). But with the pipe Zippo, I draw in the huge flame for just a brief...

    Bit Style

Yes! I currently only own 2 briars, both Petersons, both bent. I bought bent purely because I like the aesthetic more than straight. But the holes in the stem do not line up with the holes in the shank, so I cannot run a pipe cleaner without taking them apart. And they smoke wet more often than...

The Emperor's New Clothes, Musings of a New Pipe Smoker

Yes. This makes sense in principle. But in practice it somehow seems different to me. I almost think that when I bring smoke into my mouth, I am somehow blocking my nasal passage in a way that I must not be doing when I chew food. It seems so very disconnected. Thus no taste. Perhaps I should...
