    First Impression: Peterson Irish Oak

Actually, although I am not into virginias at all, I fell in love with this tobacco. I am more into balkan blends and occasionally I enjoy barley (e.g. Peterson Irish flake). Virginias are ok, but I just find them too sweet for me. I am not sure what makes exactly the difference but Irish Oak...

    My last Pete?

It is a pity that Peterson shows so many problems. Myself I have 4 Petes, relatively recently bought (within the last 5 years). Each of them had some minor issue. However, they are still the best smokers I have. Darwin rustic and SH Hansom are currently my best pipes in terms of performance. SH...

    My last Pete?

I had a similar problem with the original Sherlock pipe from the Sherlock Holmes series (someone mentioned it previously in the thread). However, it wasn't so accute as what you show here. A solution would be still to use Savinelli balsa 9 mm filters. This is less tighter than the Peterson 9 mm...

Anyone else leave the pipe to go to cigars then return back to pipes!

I enjoy occasionally a cigar, but I find that the taste in many cases is overwhelming. The nice subtle taste of the pipe tobacco is more attractive to me. However, I do remember a period in the past that I liked cigars more. This was easily traced back to my poor pipe smoking technique. When...

Flavour In English Blends Over Time

Hi, for the history I think that it is indeed some kind of pallette fatigue. I tried again after some time leaving aside the blend and the taste returned to a very good degree. So, I guess it is not (only or mainly) storage. It seems that my tongue is very sensitive to the taste, despite the...

Flavour In English Blends Over Time

Hi, ericusrex: yes, I wash my jars and I leave them to dry open for weeks before I use them again with a new tobacco. I was thinking that the environment of the jar is different than the environment of the tin and I was wondering whether this can have an effect. The way now is to make an...

Flavour In English Blends Over Time

Thanks for your replies. I indeed use take the tobacco from the jar, which I think it is ok, since I don't smoke very often and the tobacco does not seem to be dry. I guess that my palate grows weary somehow, combined with a tendency that I have to smoke fast occasionally. I need to try again! LT

Flavour In English Blends Over Time

Dear fellow pipe smokers, I have a question about English blends. I like to smoke English/Balkan/Latakia blends from the Dunhill series (London Mixture, Durbar, EMP, Nightcap, MM). When I open the tin the first few times the flavour is full and the taste is excellent. Towards the middle of the...

Breaking-in A New Pipe With Nightcap

I have tried both to break in a pipe with and without pre-carbonated bowl. I have to say it makes a great difference. The pre-carbonated bowl takes much better, i.e. you taste way less the wood. In practice pre-carbonated bowls reduce a lot the time you need to make the pipe performing best.

    Peterson owners opinion needed

I have 3 petersons. All of them had some kind of small problem, e.g. once the silver band fell off and I stick it back with glue. However, they have all been excellent smokers and I find them performing better than other pipes of the same price that I have. In particular, I haven't managed to...

    Blocked airhole

Actually, I had exactly the same issue when I got my own SH Mycroft. I did exactly the same as Shawn did. I don't really consider it a huge problem, it was very easy to remove and the pipe smoked (and still smokes) quite well. Overall I consider it one of my favourites.

    Has Peterson Quality Really Declined?

I have 3 Petersons over the years and all of them are dedicated to english blends. The first is a rusticated Darwin. This is actually the best performing pipe I have. It smoked excellently from the very first time. Very easy to break in and very well engineered. The only problem that I...

    Dunhill Nightcap

I am far from being a connoisseur and I am only able to distinguish general trends in tobaccos. E.g. I can tell the difference among virginia, english and burley. However, I do find NC the best English I have tried in terms of taste. It wasn't my first english and I guess that I had perfected...

    Beginner's question about flakes

@ Janosh yes I leave it to dry for ~15 mins, but after I have rubbed it out completely. I put it on a paper towel with lots of space between the broken flake pieces. (of course this depends on the relative humidity of the air how fast it dries) But this will fail if I do it just out of the...

    Beginner's question about flakes

Hi Janosh, I like flakes a lot and I have found out that preparation depends a lot on what flake you have. University flake is an easy one that I have tried recently and I liked a lot. Usually I was leaving the flake to dry out for an hour and then I was rubbing it out. I also found that it...
