Did Dunhill Make a Bamboo Stem?

I read the date code as 32. That would make it a 1992, which would also fit with four digit shape code. A 1982 would most likely have a 5-digit shape code. I have two whangee pipes, an early '50s tan shell, and a late '70s group five shell.

    Possible first year Tanshell W60.

Thanks for your input George, I do concur. The tenon isn't a great job, but it certainly is functional, and the stem itself is in great condition for a pipe of the age. I think they went with a harder briar to have more consistent stain results. It's possible that the deeper colors on the early...

    Possible first year Tanshell W60.

Picked up this listed as a 1962 W60 whangee Tanshell from smokingpipes. Very nice little pipe, but I'm going to disagree with the dating. I think it's actually a 1952 pipe. The date code is a superscript sized, underlined 2 alongside W60, group 4, and T stamps. No COM on the stummel. No...

    Dunhill Stem - Legit?

I also have a 1940 shell that has a wasp-y waist and is original, so they were found that kind of shaping at that time.

Joined the cult of Briarlee. This 2 star, 2nd era eBay Bullmoose cleaned up spectacularly. Didn't come with a stinger, but I strongly dislike most stingers anyways so that was no loss to me. Stem is no Comoy's, but better that my experience with postwar Kaywoodie and Graybow pipes. Rustication...

Paul's pipe shop Morning Smoke in a Sasieni Royal Stuart saddle stem pot. I didn't much care for this blend when I first tried it, but found an old ziplock bag with 4oz. Absolutely sublime.

    An Interesting Little Estate Pipe

FWIW, the early Royal Danish pipes were often smooth pipes with near to flawless briar. They had moulded stems and weren't as highly finished as a concession to cost at a time when Stanwell was using the best briar available. Excellent pipes. The smooth paneled blasted pipes seen to be of a...

Royal Danish, another Stanwell second, also used this stem logo. They also did that smooth panel on sandblast feature.

    Show Your magnum Pipes

That's a good question. Too me it is an unusually large pipe compared to other 'large' pipes. There is no standard in the pipe world that I know of. The Gresham Magnum and Sydney P Ram pipes above chambers are 1 inch by 2 inches. The Orlik is 0.9 by 2.25. the Barling's is 1.1 by 1.4, but it's a...
