Best Pipe Shop In Your Area

Here in the Salt Lake City area the selection of tobacco shops is obviously limited. We have three that are noteworthy: Beehive Cigars, south of downtown, is probably the best for pipes and tobacco. Tinder Box in Murray is a nice store, but with a limited selection. Jeanie’s downtown near the...

    Grabow Stem Leaking

You’re very welcome. I’m a big Grabow fan and toured the factory several years ago. Very dedicated bunch of folks, but occasionally their QC is lacking. The leaking stem problem crops up now and then. Being a dedicated Grabowphile, I try to fix things the production crew missed. I do believe...

    Grabow Stem Leaking

I’ve found that the leak usually occurs at the area in the photo. Clean the area well with alcohol, then carefully apply some clear 5 min. Epoxy around the junction of the aluminum and stem with a toothpick. Wipe off any excess. Let it cure overnight. This fix usually takes care of the problem...

    Lane 1 Q

I usually mix 1-Q with BCA 50/50, then add a pinch of bright Virgina flakes to dry it a bit and enhance burn rate. The BCA ramps up the flavor and depth. The ribbon cut of 1-Q burns consistently, but smoked straight it can have a little bite and burn hot. The addition of BCA cools it down and...

    Ordering From Savinelli's Website

Highly recommended also. I’ve ordered several pipes and am astonished at the delivery time. 3 days from Barasso, Italy, through customs, to Utah, for $20 shipping. It takes nearly 10 days from the east coast from other suppliers. Always excellent communication and order tracking. Great company!

What Does Your Scene Look Like?

The inner sanctum, the Man Cave, upstairs above the shop, in a separate building. Warm, cozy home theatre where I can relax in comfort while viewing classic films and TV shows, away from the scolding, disapproving eyes of the neighbors. Here in the Mormon stronghold of Utah, there are precious...

    Your First Pipe & Tobacco

Remember like it was yesterday, but it was way back in 1976. First pipe was a carve-your-own block that I carved badly. Ended up sawing it in half on a bandsaw to see how it was drilled. Tossed it long ago. Second “real” pipe was a Hilson second that I still have, but rarely smoke. First pipe...

    Corn Cob Mods?

I always wanted a full bent cob. MM doesn’t make such a deep bend. So, I take a Country Gentleman, cut off the shank, bore a 1/2” dia. hole at a 45 deg. angle on my lathe with a milling attachment for a new shank that I also turned on my lathe. This one is zebra wood. I then fit the standard...

Adding Denver to The List of Places I Won't Visit

We moved to Denver in ‘05 and moved out in ‘16. When we moved there, CO had a Republican governor, fairly conservative legislature, 30 round magazines were legal and recreational marijuana was illegal. In the 11 years we were there, all of that flipped 180 degrees and the slow, steady decline...

The house as it appeared in the film: The house present day: Quite a bit has changed, but at least it's still standing!

Best photo I could find with a top view of Douglas' pipe with white spot and fantail bit: And, I present to you The Blandings Collection that I produced for a limited time:

Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House (And Smokes Pipes) Airing 11/8/19 On TCM

A running gag throughout the film is Douglas pilfering tobacco from Grant, never using his own, right to the final scene. The publicity photo I have clearly shows the tin as Dunhill My Mixture with the number 175 written on the side. Grant’s pipe is most likely a Kaywoodie, while Douglas’ pipe...

Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House (And Smokes Pipes) Airing 11/8/19 On TCM

From what I’ve been able to ascertain, both actors smoked the same two pipes throughout the film, Douglas the Dunhill billiard with the white spot very evident in several photos in my possession, and Grant the Canadian/Lumberman with a larger white spot with a dark center, indicating a Kaywoodie...
