The biggest setback for me as a new pipesmoker is that there are so few opportunities for me to have a bowl or two. Right now there are -30 degrees celcius here (-22 fahrenheit?) and it is not so fun to go out.
I find myself sitting lurking around on pipeforums, blogs and reviewsites just longing for the weather to get a bit warmer. I am dreaming of a room in the house that I can smoke in, but I know that will never happen.
How have you solved it? Do you smoke indoors, or do I just live on the wrong place on earth?

I live where it can get just as cold in the winter, and even though I love the winter it is difficult to smoke outside when it’s so cold.
I’m sorry for your predicament. I am fortunate to have a room I can call entirely my own in my house — my study — where I can close the curtains, put my feet up, and light up whenever I want. I am also fortunate enough to be mated with a tremendously understanding partner who understands the importance of having a space of your own, who only asks me to open the window to my room once in a while to let it air out; she even likes to have a bowl with me now and then.
I have a neighbor who built himself what’s called nowadays a “man cave”, complete with pinball, pool table, dedicated beer fridge, etc. Even though he needs to park in the driveway, his garage has been made into a (certain type of) man’s paradise. Smoking, of course, is permitted.
If you are unable to claim your own space in your own house, or build yourself a man cave, or even smoke in the garage, maybe you can form your own local pipe club and meet regularly in someone’s domicile who permits smoking. Or, if you have the space in your backyard, maybe you can build yourself a little yurt dedicated to your pipe.
I hope you find something that works for you! Reading about smoking great tobacco just ain’t the same as smoking it.

sorry to hear that my friend, i live in a very windy city and smoking outsite just isnt possible for me… i do have a very understanding partner too, but the english i smoke can make the odor offensive inside so i actually prefer to smoke outside… in saying that, perhaps its a good thing as when you get the chance for a bowl you will really enjoy it - not to mantion that occasional smoking is always FAR better than over indulgent smoking.

I almost feel bad making the same complaint, since I live in Florida. However, it is so cold in FL right now that it is making news headlines that it may snow there, in what is normally a tropical climate.
Luckily, I live a block from a smoking lounge. Right now I am in Las Vegas where you can smoke everywhere, but that’s besides the point.
I think a lot of guys share your pain right now.
Tom Soles did a nice article on how to ventilate your “man cave”.

Sorry to hear that you are unable to smoke right now.
Sinistertopiary gave some good advice about trying to start up a pipe club where you can together with your friends where you are able to smoke.
Tom Soles’ article is great! The way that he did it is very nice and professional looking.

I have thought about it, but I can’t really think of any place except outside where it would be ok to smoke.

I too have found myself in similar situations, I have roommates who would keel over and die at the thought of someone smoking in the house, my mate enjoys smoking a bowl with me or on her own, so we tend to smoke in the car while traveling to and from place to place. Otherwise, we go out on the porch and brave the wind, rain, snow…etc. Sometimes, though it is cold, on a calm snow covered day, a brisk walk pipe in hand can be very thought provoking and soul warming.
Good luck toughing in out.
